What Is the GoodWe ESA Battery?
The ESA is GoodWe’s all-in-one battery platform: a hybrid inverter and a stack of Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) battery modules built into a single wall-mounted cabinet, rather than a separate inverter and battery bolted together. It’s sold in single-phase inverter sizes from 3kW to 10kW, built from 5kWh or 8kWh modules, and you can stack up to six modules on one tower — a maximum of roughly 48kWh usable from a single unit, with the option to add a second tower later if your needs grow.
Most Mid North Coast homes start with one or two modules and leave room on the wall for more. That’s the point of a modular design — you’re not locked into today’s household size or today’s power bill.

What the Rebate Is Worth Right Now
The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program discounts eligible batteries upfront, the same way the solar rebate has worked for years — through Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) assigned to your installer and taken off your invoice.
The rebate is tiered by battery size
Your usable capacity’s first 14kWh attracts the full rate, the next tranche up to 28kWh attracts a reduced rate, and anything from 29kWh to 50kWh attracts a much smaller rate again. The rate itself also steps down every six months as the scheme runs through to 2030 — so the earlier you install, the larger the discount on the same battery.
On top of the federal rebate, NSW households can also claim the state’s VPP incentive — a one-off payment for connecting an eligible battery to a Virtual Power Plant — and the two are designed to be claimed together, not one or the other.
Indicative supply-and-install pricing after the current federal rebate, across common GoodWe ESA configurations:
| Usable capacity | Modules | Indicative price after rebate* |
|---|---|---|
| ~8kWh | 1 module | From approx. $5,000 – $6,000 |
| ~16kWh | 2 modules | From approx. $6,000 – $8,000 |
| ~25kWh | 3 modules | From approx. $8,000 – $10,000 |
| ~33kWh | 4 modules | From approx. $10,000 – $13,000 |
| ~48kWh | 6 modules | From approx. $15,000 – $19,000 |
*Indicative only, based on current published GoodWe ESA pricing and the federal rebate rate in effect at the time of writing. The rebate reduces roughly every six months, GST, installation complexity, switchboard work and site access all affect the final number, and the NSW VPP incentive is not included above. Ask us for a fixed, written quote showing the STC count and rebate assumed.

Which Mid North Coast Homes This Suits
The best fit is a home that loses power in a storm, runs a lot of daytime solar to waste, or is about to add an EV.
Storm & Blackout Prone
Rural properties from the Hastings to the Manning and Nambucca valleys, and coastal streets from Woolgoolga to Forster-Tuncurry, that lose power every time a east coast low rolls through. A GoodWe ESA switches to backup in under 4 milliseconds and can carry your whole switchboard, not just the fridge.
Solar Owners Exporting for Cents
Homes across Port Macquarie, Kempsey and Taree that already have solar and watch the feed-in tariff shrink every year. If your panels make more than you use by 2pm, the excess is worth far more stored and used at night than sold back at a few cents a kWh.
Growing Households & EVs
Families adding a pool, air conditioning, or an EV charger who don’t want a bigger power bill to go with it. The modular design means you can size for today and add another module later, rather than guessing the final number now.
New Solar & Battery Together
Households from Sawtell to Wingham installing solar for the first time who want backup power from day one rather than retrofitting it later. Pairing a new solar system with a GoodWe ESA from the outset is usually the most cost-effective way to get both.
Why the Rebate Rewards Moving Sooner
The discount steps down on a schedule, not a whim. The federal rebate rate is scheduled to fall roughly every six months between now and when the scheme winds up in 2030. The battery hardware doesn’t get more expensive because you waited — but the government’s contribution to it does get smaller.
Switchboard and site checks matter more than people expect. Older homes sometimes need a switchboard upgrade or a metering change before a battery can go in. Better to find that out in a site visit than after the battery has arrived.
What we’d do from here:
- Bill and usage review. We look at your actual consumption pattern — when you use power, what your solar exports, and whether backup or bill reduction matters more to you.
- System design. We size the module count to your load and roof, not the other way around, and check your switchboard and meter setup.
- Written quote with the numbers shown. The battery size, the STC count, the rebate rate assumed, and the VPP incentive — laid out separately, not folded into one round number.
- Install and VPP connection. Certificates assigned, discount applied to your invoice, and your battery connected to an eligible VPP if you choose to claim the NSW incentive.
None of steps one to three commit you to anything — they just mean your numbers are accurate before you decide.

Does Your Home Qualify?
There’s no income test on the federal rebate. The criteria are about the system and the site, not your household income:
- Usable battery capacity between 5kWh and 50kWh. Every GoodWe ESA single-phase configuration sits inside this range.
- On the Clean Energy Council approved battery list. The GoodWe ESA is CEC approved.
- Installed by an SAA-accredited installer. We handle the paperwork and STC assignment for you.
- Connected to a new or existing rooftop solar system. You don’t need to be installing solar and battery at the same time — an existing system is fine.
- Once per property (NMI). A property that has already claimed the rebate on an existing battery can’t claim it again on a new one.
- VPP-capable. To claim the rebate the battery must be capable of connecting to a Virtual Power Plant — you’re not obligated to join one, though it’s where the extra NSW incentive comes from.
We’ll confirm your exact eligibility and current rebate rate against your address and your existing system before you commit to anything.
GoodWe ESA Battery FAQs
It’s GoodWe’s all-in-one home battery platform: a hybrid inverter and a modular stack of LiFePO4 battery packs built into one cabinet. It’s sold in single-phase inverter sizes from 3kW to 10kW, built from 5kWh or 8kWh modules, and scales from a 5kWh starter system up to roughly 48kWh on a single stack.
It depends on how many modules you install and the current rebate rate. As a rough guide, a single 8kWh module typically lands in the low-$5,000s after the current federal rebate, scaling up from there as you add modules. Get a written quote for your address — the rebate rate changes every six months, so a figure from a few months ago may already be out of date.
Two incentives currently stack: the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program, which discounts the battery upfront through Small-scale Technology Certificates, and the NSW VPP incentive, a one-off payment for connecting an eligible battery to a Virtual Power Plant. Both apply to the GoodWe ESA, which is CEC approved and VPP-capable.
No — the battery needs to be VPP-capable to qualify for the federal rebate, but you’re not required to actually join one. If you do connect to a VPP, you become eligible for the separate NSW incentive on top of the federal discount, and you keep control over how and when the VPP is allowed to use your battery.
Yes, with the right setup. The ESA switches to backup power in under 4 milliseconds and can support a 63A full-home backup load on single phase — most households won’t notice the switch happen. Your installer will confirm exactly what’s covered based on your switchboard and circuit layout.
Yes. The federal rebate applies whether the battery is installed with new solar or added to a system you already have, and you don’t need to already own a GoodWe inverter — the ESA works as a standalone all-in-one unit.
It depends on your evening usage and whether backup power or bill reduction matters more to you. A single 8kWh module suits light evening use; two to three modules (16–25kWh) covers most families wanting solid backup and daily bill reduction. We size this from your actual bill and usage data, not a rule of thumb.
The current GoodWe ESA single-phase inverter and battery modules carry a 10-year Australian-backed warranty. Ask us for the exact warranty document for your configuration, as terms can vary slightly between the battery module and the inverter component.
A straightforward install on an existing solar system is typically a one-day job on-site, though the lead time from quote to install can run several weeks depending on switchboard work, meter changes, and installer scheduling. Any required switchboard upgrade is best identified at the site visit stage, not on install day.
